Play And Torment 2000-2002

Like a certain amount of my work, this series emerged almost accidently, as a by-product of social interaction and play. The works were shot on a plastic disposable underwater camera, over a summer or two spent swimming and snorkeling in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. The images were by nature a combination of chance and intention, with careful composition a near- impossibility considering the variables encountered with both model and photographer working underwater. Echoes of earlier work are found in this series in the recurring themes of the ascending and descending body, and references to religious iconography that embrace both kitsch and beauty.
